ANTALYA
This city, located in southwestern Turkey on the Mediterranean coast, is the capital city of Antalya Province, which is in the fastest growing province in Turkey and is the centre of Turkey’s tourism industry. It is surrounded by mountains on three sides and the sea on the fourth, is on coastal cliffs, and was transformed into a major international resort in the 1970’s.
Uncovered in excavations in 2008, remains discovered date back to the 3rd century BC. The city prospered during the Ancient Roman period. It was briefly occupied by Italians from the end of the First World War until the Turkish Republic was founded in 1923.
The town’s orchards produce a special kind of apricot which has a sweet almond in its kernel, is dried, and exported to Egypt as a luxury.
This regions lies along a beautiful stretch of the Mediterranean which has come to be known as the Turkish Riviera and is a popular amongst travellers taking holidays to Turkey.
BODRUM
Guarding the entrance to this centre of the Turkish art community is the medieval castle of St. Peter built by the Knights of Rhodes, which has been turned into the Museum of Underwater Archeology. There is also one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, an old Mausoleum, to explore.
The Mediterranean Sea and the Aegean meet here, and there is a long waterfront with elegant yachts in the marina. The boatyards date back to ancient times, and even today craftsmen still build traditional yachts. Nearby you can swim in clear warm seas, and underwater divers can explore the caves and rock formations. There are multicolored sponges and a variety of aquatic life including octopi.
Bodrum’s Bohemian atmosphere encourages small galleries and many restaurants, night clubs, and discos. The Amphi-theatre is on a hillside and can accommodate around 13,000 and was built around 330 to 30 B.C.
DALAMAN
This Turkish area is located between the mountains and the sea and is protected from over-development because of the sanctuary for the rare loggerhead sea turtles that frequent its huge natural beach. However, modern tourist attractions are still being planned such as new marinas and a golf course.
Dalaman is known for its international airport which is the gateway for the tourists to visit this part of Turkey. The Alexandria train staton was built in 1906 and is today the headquarters of a large state farm with mostly citrus fruits.

IZMIR
Formerly known as Smyrna, Izmir is Turkey’s largest port after Istanbul and the third most populous city with its ten metropolitan districts with each having its own distinct features. The city is referred to as “The Pearl of the Aegean”. Homer is said to have been born here. Various architecture is thought to have been built during the Roman Empire period.
This city survived devastations such as a 1676 plague, a 1688 earthquake, a 1743 fire, and its greatest disaster with a fire in 1922.
Izmir has an international arts festival in June and July and the Izmir International Fair in the beginning of September. There are many fair and exhibition events at other times as well.
